As a Baha'i, this poetry held particular significance for me as it connected me further with Tahirih's absolute love for God and sense of divine purpose.


Tahirih, the remarkable poetess of nineteenth-century Persia, penned many poems that were either thought to be lost or remained untranslated. This outstanding volume contains a number of previously unpublished and largely unknown poems both in their original calligraphy and in English. Many of these poems relate to Tahirih's spiritual beliefs. The Quickening thus contains poems that are most appropriate to the conclusion of the corpus of the poetry of?áhirih inasmuch as they are largely dedicated to the announcement and celebration of the advent of the Day of Days, to the spiritual reformation of human society long promised in all the previous revealed religions and alluded to by. Táhirih’s poems are centrally shaped by the insistence of versification alongside revolution; an intimate, if contentious, alliance—the twin muses—from which neither could entirely escape. “And through His revolution in His celestial habitation, / the heavens of creation are illumined by the light of glory from the Exalted One” (Hatcher and Hemmat ).
